Sigh…
Nobody is free of the problem, it seems.
The problem of spam, and spambots, and spam attacks, and…
Not even The Legal Genealogist.
Now you might think that a single small genealogically-oriented website might fly under the radar of the spammers and spambot operators.
Nope.
Twice now this site has been taken down, or taken over, by problems from the outside.
We’re working on one of those right now.
Not to worry: it is fixable, it’s just annoying and makes you wonder about people who clearly have way too much time on their hands.
Stand by … won’t be more than 48 hours …we hope…
Drat!
Dislike! Hope you’re back in business soon!
Spent a good 10 or 15 years fighting computer viruses and malware. When they first showed up most of it was just a malicious virus that would wipe your hard drive. Later these evolved into viruses and malware that would steal your data. Then Root Kits that were harder to detect. The amazing part is we have companies that spend millions on firewalls to block and catch these things, but alas, all for naught. The breakthroughs continue, even the blackmail malware that encrypts your data and then has the audacity to ask for money if you want your data back from your own hard drive! What can the little guy with a computer do out here! Short answer, not much. Having said that, use a good virus and malware catcher and backup, backup, backup. All websites, .gov’s and even the The Legal Genealogist can get malware on it so every time one of us visit, that little guy can just jump on like a hitch hiker or they crash it. Its kinda like life…just do your best.
This wasn’t a malware problem, Stan, but rather akin to a denial of service attack: a spambot hitting on the website so often that the hosting company was ready to say enough already yet. It’s a major annoyance.
