Father’s Day DNA sale

The Legal Genealogist is at summer camp for genealogists this week — otherwise known as the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Alabama. So the blog this week is focusing on terms — words and phrases — we may come across in legal documents that don’t always mean what we think they mean.

saleWords like today’s term of the day: sale.

Not that genealogists ever like things that save us money, do we?

Right…

So. Sunday is Father’s Day, and one type of DNA test that tells us a great deal about our direct paternal line (our father’s father’s father’s line) is the YDNA test.1

And there’s only one game in town when it comes to YDNA testing: Family Tree DNA.

And FTDNA is having a sale.

It’s already underway — it kicked off at midnight last night — and it runs through 11:59 p.m. (CST) on Monday, June 20th.

The big part of the sale is in upgrading existing YDNA tests to more markers — more depth to the DNA evidence of direct paternal descent.

Here are the sale prices on YDNA upgrades:

Upgrade Regular Price Sale Price
Y12-Y25 $49 $40
Y12-Y37 $99 $79
Y25-Y37 $49 $40
Y37-Y67 $99 $79
Y37-Y111 $220 $188
Y67-Y111 $129 $109

And that’s not all. You can also upgrade your mtDNA testing. That’s the mitochondrial DNA test — the one that looks at the kind of DNA that you inherited from your mother and she from her mother and so on back through time.2 You can expand your HVR1 level mtDNA test to the Full Mitochondrial Sequence for $139, down from the usual cost of $159, and you can upgrade from the HVR2 level (mtDNA Plus) costing $129 instead of the usual $139.

And even that’s not all. You can also bundle some new tests — not upgrades at all — and save as well. You can bundle a Y37 test plus the Family Finder autosomal test3 for $218, down from the regular price of $268. You can bundle a Y67 test and Family Finder for $288, down from the regular price of $367. And you can do what’s called a comprehensive genome — the Family Finder plus Y67 plus the full mitochondrial sequence test — for a sale price of $449, down from the regular price of $566.

Taking advantage of a sale like this is a great way to give Dad a priceless gift for Father’s Day … benefiting ourselves at the same time … and saving money to boot.
