The Legal Genealogist thinks time is running by awfully fast…
Sigh… So now that we’re officially into fall–and a busy fall it will be–as always I want to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip…
Here’s an overview of what’s coming up in October, and we’ll go ahead and take a peek at November.
October 2023
• Friday-Sunday, 6-8 October: The hybrid in-person and online East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference will be held in person at the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, and online. There are loads of great presenters and presentations scheduled, and I’ll be joining in remotely on Saturday night, October 7, with A Matter of Standards: DNA and the Genealogical Proof Standard and After the Courthouse Burns: Rekindling Family History through DNA. • Saturday, 7 October: The Connecticut Society of Genealogists is hosting its in-person Family History Day Seminar, “Women and Children First: Remembering Them All,” at the Hartog Auditorium at Ashlar Village in Wallinford. Casey Zahn will present Finding Women in Records: 1700-1800, and I’ll present Don’t Forget the Ladies: A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law and Dowered or Bound Out: Records of Widows and Orphans. • Wednesday, 11 October, 7 p.m. EDT: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is hosting the virtual presentation African Americans in the Archives: Federal Records for Black History. For more information and to register, see the events page.
• Thursday, 12 October, 7 p.m. EDT: The Chester County History Center is hosting the virtual presentation Rogues, Rascals and Rapscallions: The Family Black Sheep. For more information, see the events calendar.
• Friday-Saturday, 13-14 October: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is hosting its hybrid two-day program, Exploring Trends in Technology and Genealogy. I’m delighted to be keynoting with a look at the path Into the Future at 9:50 a.m. EDT on Friday, 13 October. Other speakers include Jen Baldwin, Blaine T. Bettinger, Nicole Elder Dyer and Jonny Perl, and the weekend promises to be terrific. For more information and to register, see the events page .
• Friday, 13 October, 12 noon EDT: The New Jersey State Library is hosting the virtual presentation Property Rights and Wrongs – African-Americans at the Courthouse. For more information and to register, see the events calendar.
• Saturday, 14 October: The Allen County Public Library is hosting three virtual presentations: Putting Those Records to Work; More Than Just Names: Advanced Census Research; and Landing the Fourths: Proving a Case with Court, Land, and DNA Evidence. • Tuesday, 17 October, 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT): The Davis (California) Genealogy Club is hosting the virtual presentation No, no, Nanette! What negative evidence is … and isn’t. For more information, see the event page.
• Wednesday, 18 October, 2 p.m. EDT: Legacy Family Tree Webinars is hosting the virtual presentation The Gentlemen Judges: Justices of the Peace. For more information and to register, see the webinar page.
• Thursday-Saturday, 19-21 October: The Association of Professional Genealogists is hosting its hybrid in-person and virtual 2023 Professional Management Conference, “Reset Refresh Refine Your Genealogy Career,” at the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown. I’m honored to be kicking off the conference with the keynote Reset, Refresh, Refine…and Smell the Roses on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. MDT (10:15 a.m. EDT). For more information, see the conference page.

• Saturday, 21 October, 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT): Rogue Valley Genealogical Society is hosting its virtual 2023 Fall Seminar, “From ASP to Gasp! The Law and Legal Records.” It’ll feature three presentations: An Act for the Relief of Gregory Thomas and Others: The Private Laws of the Federal and State Governments; Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Law for Genealogists; and Unexpected Treasures: Family History in the American State Papers. • Saturday, 4 November: The Friends of the Virginia State Archives will host the 23rd annual Slatten Lecture in-person at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. It’ll feature four presentations: “Living with Legal Lingo,” “Putting Those Records to Work,” “Dower and Dowry: Women, Property & Legal Records,” and “When Worlds Collide: Resolving Conflicts in Genealogical Records.” For more information and to register, email the Friends of the Virginia State Archives at slattenlecture2023@gmail.com.
• Thursday, 9 November, 7 p.m. ET: The Anne Arundel Genealogical Society and the Howard County Genealogical Society are hosting the virtual presentation “Dowered or Bound Out: Records of Widows and Orphans. For more information, see the HCGS the events page.
• Saturday, 18 November, 1 p.m. PT: The Ventura County Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation Colonial Lands: From the Crown to Private Hands. For more information and to register, keep an eye on the events page.
Come on out and join us, if you can, for one or more of these events and note, in many cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some are limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
