As June gets off to a start, it marks as always the start of the summer institute season. GRIP’s virtual session, then MAAGI’s hybrid courses, then GRIP’s in-person session, then… Not to mention the individual talks for societies and libraries and…
Yep, busy busy busy — and fun. And The Legal Genealogist wants to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip. There are even still slots available in the summer institute courses, so don’t miss out!
June 2024
• Saturday, 1 June, 7 p.m. EDT: The Florida Genealogical Society-Tampa hosted the virtual presentation Facts, Photos and Fair Use: Copyright Law for Genealogists. Thanks to all who attended!.
• Saturday, 8 June, 10 a.m. EDT: The Grand Strand Genealogical Society, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is hosting the presentation How Old Did He Have to Be…?. Available virtually to members only, see the Membership page.
• Thursday, 13 June, 6 p.m. CDT (7 p.m. EDT): The Appleton (Wisconsin) Public Library is hosting the virtual presentation Polls, Personalty and Property – Making Sense of Tax Lists. For more information and to register, see the event calendar page.
• Saturday, 15 June, 10 a.m. CDT (11 a.m. EDT): The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation From Blackstone to the Statutes at Large–How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists. For more information and to register, see the events page.
• Monday-Friday 24-28 June: The GRIP Genealogy Institute is hosting its virtual week of institute courses, ranging from using artificial intelligence in genealogy to researching women and children. At least one seat is still available in a whole bunch of courses, including my own Women and Children First! Research Methods for the Hidden Half of the Family. July 2024
• Tuesday-Thursday 9-11 July: The Midwest African American Genealogy Institute is hosting its hybrid institute courses, in person at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and online. Courses focus on researching African American families, and are fabulous for those who descend from the enslaved, the enslavers, free people of color and/or all those whose lives crossed path with any of them — in other words, for just about anybody. Seats are still available in all four tracks (fundamentals, slave-era research, intermediate, and African-Native American research). For more information and to register, see the MAAGI website.
• Monday-Friday 15-19 July: The GRIP Genealogy Institute is hosting its in-person week of institute courses at LaRoche University in Pittsburgh. Courses range from church records to overcoming records loss to Ashkenazic Jewish research and more. At least one seat is still available in a whole bunch of courses, including my own methodology course, Putting Those Records to Work. • Monday-Friday 22-26 July: The Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research of the Georgia Genealogical Society is hosting its virtual institute week, with 13 courses, ranging from methodology to French research to DNA. At least one seat is still available in a whole bunch of courses, including my own Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis. For more information and to register, see the IGHR 2024 courses page.
Come on out and join us, if you can, for one or more of these events and note, in some cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some are limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
