One last chance for SLIG 2025 classes
The clock is ticking fast for one last chance to take advantage of one of the best educational opportunities genealogy has to offer.
It’s what The Legal Genealogist calls winter camp for genealogists1 — otherwise known as the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) — and there are just a few slots open in two classes in particular that are (a) virtual and (b) offer unparalleled depth and breadth of education into materials every family historian needs.
And they start on Monday, January 27 — that’s not quite two weeks away!
Those two courses are Corpus Juris: Advanced Legal Concepts for Genealogy, coordinated by yours truly, and African American Genealogy Methods and Strategies, coordinated by my friend and colleague LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, CGL, FASG. You can read more about both of them at the SLIG Virtual Courses page — cursor down to Course 4 for Corpus Juris and to Course 5 for African American Genealogy.
If you act quickly — remember that ticking clock! — you can then register for these winter camp classes starting with the info on the Registration page.
Each of these courses has something absolutely unavailable anywhere else:
• The Corpus Juris law course will ground attendees thoroughly in all the major legal sources and resources that genealogists need to understand the law that gave rise to so many of the records we rely on every day. And students in the course will get access for a month to a premier legal research online tool that is normally subscription only — and has everything from early state statutes to court records and more. It’s a veritable legal goldmine, fully word searchable, and those enrolled get hands-on training in how to use it well.
• The African American Genealogy course will offer attendees a unique, hands-on experience: they’ll work in groups to conduct research that will be vetted and contributed to the 10 Million Names project, with findings also shared on the Famous Kin website. It’s an amazing chance to make a meaningful impact in documenting African American history while honing research skills.
I could go on and on about both of these classes, but hey… the clock is ticking! Time’s a wasting! And you don’t want to miss out. Candidly here — there’s no guarantee either of them will be offered again any time soon, if at all.2
So head over to the SLIG website to read more about both of these classes, then make sure to get the registration procedures.
Hope to see you at winter camp for genealogists!

NOTES
Since SLIG is virtual this year, you can be in Australia and attend. And in Australia, it is summer. So … summer camp, at least for them.
