Ancestry and others matching NGS donations
The merger of the National Genealogical Society (NGS) and the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) under the NGS umbrella has created unique opportunities… and unique challenges.
Taking advantage of those opportunities — and overcoming those challenges — will be to the enormous benefit of all genealogists.
And like everything else in this world — there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.
So The Legal Genealogist has just done something to help today.
I donated to NGS, this morning, because from now until December 10, Ancestry and “other generous donors” will match every dollar up to a maximum of $25,000 to advance the goals of the New NGS.1

The NGS merger with FGS has united individual genealogists with genealogy societies and organizations, giving the #NewNGS a powerful voice in protecting access to local, regional, and national genealogically significant records.
We will build on new and innovative conference services delivered in the midst of the pandemic.
We will develop exciting new online courses to add to the DNA, Transcription, and Reading Old Handwriting courses introduced this year.
We will add more robust tools and resources to the website for our new society and organization members.This and much more are in the planning stages for the coming year.3

The reality is, without access to records, genealogy stops dead in its tracks. And records access is under attack everywhere, often on mistaken and misunderstood privacy grounds. In the past few years, we have lost some fights on access — we’ve lost access to updated entries in the Social Security Death Index, seen death and other vital records closed for decades, and more.
But we have won some important fights as well — and can win more if we’re ready to move quickly when these mistaken and misguided record closure efforts begin.
That takes resources. And resources require funding.
Every penny counts.
