Upcoming presentations
It’s the height of the institute season for The Legal Genealogist, which means a very busy schedule coming up.
For those events that aren’t institute courses, as always I want to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip…
Here’s an overview of what’s coming up in July, and we’ll go ahead and take a peek at August.
July 2022
• Sunday, 10 July, 2 p.m. EDT: The Monmouth County Genealogy Society here in New Jersey is hosting the virtual presentation Prerogatives and Surrogates: Probate in New Jersey. Register through Thursday on the society’s website.
• Monday-Friday, 11-15 July: The July session of the Genealogical Research Institute will be held virtually, and I’m going to have a ball coordinating one of my favorite courses, Women & Children First! Research Strategies for the Hidden Half of the Family. My instructor team — including Blaine T. Bettinger, Catherine Becker Wiest Desmarais, Michael S. Ramage, Richard G. Sayre, Marian Smith and Ari Wilkins — is stellar! I’ll also be lecturing on New Jersey laws and courts in Melissa Johnson’s great course, Gateway to the Garden State: New Jersey Research.
• Tuesday-Thursday, 12-14 July: The Midwest African American Genealogy Institute gets underway virtually and, in between GRIP classes, I’m honored to be teaching four subjects: Slavery and the Law, Resolving Conflicting Evidence, Public Records and the Law and Slavery in the North.
• Saturday, 16 July, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. CDT: The Mississippi Genealogical Society is getting together in person for its annual seminar in Pearl, and I’ll be presenting four lectures: (1) Dower & Dowry: Women, Property, and Legal Records; (2) NARA MythBusters: Your Family IS in the Archives; (3) Putting Those Records to Work; and (4) Landing the Fourths: Proving a Case with Court, Land, and DNA Evidence. For more information and to register, check out the seminar website for full details.
• Monday-Friday, 25-29 July: The 2022 Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research rounds out the summer virtual institute season. I’m coordinating Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis, supported by a terrific team: LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson; Melissa A. Johnson; David McDonald; David E. Rencher; Angela Packer McGhie; Thomas W. Jones; and Michael L. Strauss. And in my abundant spare time (ahem…), I’ll be lecturing as well in the Intermediate Genealogy, Advanced Library Research and African American courses.
• Thursday, 28 July, 8 p.m. EDT: The Kane County Genealogical Society, Geneva, Illinois, and the Batavia Public Library are jointly hosting the virtual presentation Through the Golden Door-Immigration after the Civil War. Watch the library’s events page for more information.
