Ulp!! It really is November already!
And as the year winds down, The Legal Genealogist takes a deep breath and looks at what’s coming up on the lecture schedule — a lighter schedule for sure at this time of year but one on which you’re invited along for the ride as much as possible.
Here’s an overview of what’s coming up in November, and we’ll go ahead and take a peek at December.
November 2023
• Saturday, 4 November: The Friends of the Virginia State Archives will host the 23rd annual Slatten Lecture in-person at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. It’ll feature four presentations: “Living with Legal Lingo,” “Putting Those Records to Work,” “Dower and Dowry: Women, Property & Legal Records,” and “When Worlds Collide: Resolving Conflicts in Genealogical Records.” For more information and to register, email the Friends of the Virginia State Archives at slattenlecture2023@gmail.com.
• Thursday, 9 November, 7 p.m. ET: The Anne Arundel Genealogical Society and the Howard County Genealogical Society are hosting the virtual presentation “Dowered or Bound Out: Records of Widows and Orphans. For more information, see the HCGS events page or the AAGS events page.
• Friday and Saturday, 10-11 November: The Seattle Genealogical Society is hosting its virtual Fall seminar Death and Taxes, with multiple presenters discussing records of these genealogically-rich records. I’m kicking off the weekend at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET) on Friday, 10 November with Polls, Personalty and Property – Making Sense of Tax Lists. Other presenters, scheduled on Saturday, are Annette Burke Lyttle with Obituaries and Other Death Information in Online Newspapers, Lisa Gorrell with Probate Records: More Than Just Wills, Nicole Dyer with Tax Records Tell the Story: Cluster and Neighborhood Research and Gregory Gardner, MD, with Digging into Death Certification Data to Uncover Family History and Family Health Information Treasures: A Physician’s Perspective. • Saturday, 18 November, 1 p.m. PT: The Ventura County Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation Colonial Lands: From the Crown to Private Hands. For more information and to register, keep an eye on the events page.
December 2023
• Wednesday, 13 December, 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. ET): The Pikes Peak Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation Polls, Personality, and Property: Making Sense of Tax Lists. Members receive a Zoom link automatically; guests can request an invitation from the PPGS president via the link at the Programs page.
• Thursday, 14 December, 8 p.m. ET: The Association of Professional Genealogists is hosting the virtual members-only presentation Right, Wrong or It Depends: Ethics for the Professional Genealogist. APG members can find more information and register at the APG website.
• Wednesday, 20 December, 7 p.m. PT: The Sachem Public Library is hosting the virtual presentation More Than Just Names: Advanced US Census Research. For more information and to register, check out the events page.
Come on out and join us, if you can, for one or more of these events and note, in many cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some are limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
